Why Cats Groom Themselves So Often

Post by John42 »

Grooming is a major part of a cat’s daily routine. Cats spend a large portion of their awake time cleaning their fur, and this behavior serves multiple purposes. Grooming helps remove dirt, loose hair, and parasites, keeping the coat healthy and insulated.

Beyond cleanliness, grooming helps regulate body temperature. Saliva evaporates from the fur, providing a cooling effect. Grooming also stimulates blood flow and spreads natural oils, which keep the coat shiny and waterproof.

Grooming has emotional benefits too. Cats groom themselves when they are stressed or trying to calm down. This makes grooming a natural coping mechanism. However, excessive grooming can sometimes signal anxiety or skin issues.

In normal amounts, grooming is a sign of a healthy cat maintaining both physical and emotional balance in daily life.
